yes, i went to sleep between this picture and the last;
for about 4 hours
no, i didn't sleep in my clothes
but in a little burst of hopefulness
i do put on my studio clothes every morning
hoping i'll paint a bit
but
once i sit down at the computer
i just don't get up
it's that addictive for me
solving the structural problems
and
at this point of the programming process
i can't find the painting place
the activities are too extremely different:
exploration vs examination,
but i feel that this is about
upgrading my virtual home
(it currently uses frames & doesn't use style sheets)
so that i can really use it as a tool

another day in front of the computer
and i mean completely in front of the computer
(it's now 4 am)
still building the frame work for my revised site
it's been a long time coming
but it makes me feel secure
to think that i finally will have someplace to put all my projects
it's very parallel to getting my studio to a place where it functions for me
and it also involves going backward
which means there is a lot of stuff that's gotten stirred up

with the cats totally traumatized
(they didn't come out for days)
and the only thing going through my head was

i am exhausted
even though all i've done is relax

i do know why
in the whole time i have been away
aside from the time asleep,
some of the time doing my watercolors
and a 50 min (kind of) yoga class
i have been with people
i haven't even had a moment to read

because when you've been up for 18 hours
and still haven't done your self portrait
this is what can happen:

i must have grabbed him
posed him
(and squeezed him)

every 5 seconds
he didn't seem to mind

it was a lot about light today

and about blue

this morning,
when i went to get bananas for breakfast
it was my first time outside in over a day
and these flags were a surprise
as was the blue, blue sky

(my corner has certainly changed in the past 3 years)

then,
in my studio,
it was the first day
with direct sunlight coming in through the skylights...
this has always been a time of great joy for me
when i experience evidence that spring is coming
as i am working
and i have always felt the need to document it
(though it seems that at wooster street this would happen earlier)

and then,
the day ended
with the experience of witnessing the light fade
from the james turrell meeting room
a beautiful meditation on light, space & color

24 hours into a headache

on my birthday
i started another project as part of my daily watercolors;
i had noticed that
in certain journals
i was connecting my drawings
from day to day
so
for this project
i am making each daily painting
on individual papers
i will assemble the books later
accordion style
each book will go from the 15th to the 15th
and there will
(obviously)
be 12
i don't think the orientation will matter
initially i saw them hanging vertically
but they could be horizontal as well
this rewinds back
30 years

(as in why am i doing this?)
and what?
(as in what does it mean?)
and if "art" is about some sort of "truth"

which truth?

it's a place you have to go
if you are going to discover anything
but i know from experience
that it can be an uncomfortable place
a place of questions
with no immediate answers
it's the dark underbelly of process
and it's particularly awkward when it occurs publicly...

i was going to do the fgr camouflage challenge
but there was just something that felt right about the image above

and anyway
it wasn't my intent when i took the one below
i was more in the
"clearing out this studio is going to be the death of me" frame of mind

had dinner with my nephew tonite
b4 he went back to la for the holidays
i meant to take my sp w/him
but when i took out my camera...
no memory card
and my cell phone was basically dead

since he has the same middle name as my dad
(though it was the name everyone new my father by)
and since he identifies with it

nothing looked right today
especially not me
and not this sweatshirt either

it doesn't matter whether it's clothing or paint
(or anything else for that matter)
it's my all time favorite color

at one time
brera cinnabar oil was this color
but they changed the formula
and i am forever trying to mix it
williamsburg paint once made a special edition color
that was a version of this,
for someone who decided they didn't want it
so i bought all that was left

anyway,
this is a close approximation

i made one of my favorite meals tonite
for the first time in easily 3 years
pumpkin ravioli with an eggplant/tomato sauce
(plus a bit of ricotta & parmesan)
sounds odd
but it works
